The material of this bottle was previously thought to be quartzite, but in fact appears to be a rare type of beige jasper. A bottle clearly by the same carver is also in the Crane Collection, no. 901 which is in green and brown jasper of the more standard range. The carving of the peonies on both bottles is very similar, and the overall style with its superbly rounded and well polished detail particularly of the petals, identical.
