SPINACH WITH BLACK STREAKS

Date: 1750-1800

Height: 52 mm

Jadeite, very well hollowed, of bulbous ovoid form, with a concave base, and rounded shoulders sloping to a neck with a slightly concave mouth, the stone dappled with markings in emerald and bright apple-green. 


Possibly Imperial, attributed to the Palace Workshops.

Although we associate jadeite with the brightest of green colors that the Chinese hold in the highest esteem, it occurs in both a range and a combination of colors across the green palette and also in pinks, blues, grays and reds. James Kraft wrote "the endless colors of jade are the result of each stone's experience in the earth."

Interestingly the bottle from the Stevens Collection, and one of his favorites, was in all liklihood made from the same boulder and perhaps at the same time as this bottle.
