This is a great example of a limestone bottle, which although visually dramatic, is still understated.  The highly unusual sculptural form is achieved by rendering the sides with softly faceted panels, rather than the usual rounded sides. The quality of the carving can be seen in the footrim, which is both deeply and delicately executed.  The inclusions in the stone are more reminiscent of an abstract painting than a natural material.
